College Application Essays: basics and approach

When applying for college, students are commonly asked to share who they are, what they care about, and what life has taught them. To meet that need, these lessons begin with drawing out core values, meaningful experiences, and passionate interests from students’ lives. In this class, as in everything I teach, relationship comes first. But right after that comes information and knowledge. These classes teach the fundamentals of narrative essays, including two primary structures that work whether or not students know what they want to major in. We then move into brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising until we have a finished person statement. Through that process, we inevitably go on a journey through students’ own knowledge of self. It is an honor to take part.
